Codes and Standards

At MAC Engineering, our dedication to structural engineering excellence is exemplified by the leadership and contributions of our Principal, Luca Magenes. With a profound commitment to public safety and innovation, Luca has played a pivotal role in developing key industry standards and guidelines that shape modern engineering practices.

Leadership in Blast-Resistant Design

Luca Magenes served as the Chair and Editor of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Task Committee responsible for the third edition of Design of Blast-Resistant Buildings in Energy and Industrial Facilities. This comprehensive guide provides updated methodologies and design examples for structural engineers focused on protecting buildings from explosive events. The publication addresses critical topics such as risk-based facility siting, dynamic analysis methods, and the implementation of energy-absorbing systems.

Contributions to Modular Structural Design and OFFSITE Construction

Recognizing the growing importance of modular construction, Luca contributed to the development of ASCE’s Structural Design of Modules for Energy and Industrial Facilities. This guide offers best practices for engineers designing modular structures, emphasizing the benefits of offsite fabrication, such as improved quality control and project efficiency. It also highlights the necessity of early planning and interdisciplinary collaboration in modular projects.

Luca’s expertise extends to his participation in the working group for the International Code Council’s (ICC) Standard 1200, which sets forth requirements for offsite modular construction. This standard encompasses aspects like controlled manufacturing environments, supply chain integration, and the distinction between structural and nonstructural modular components.

Leading the Energy Infrastructure Assessment in ASCE’s 2025 Report Card

In 2025, Luca Magenes played a pivotal role in shaping national infrastructure policy as a member of the ASCE Committee on America’s Infrastructure. As the lead for the Energy category in the 2025 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure, Luca oversaw the evaluation of the nation’s energy systems, analyzing factors such as capacity, condition, funding, and resilience. His leadership contributed to the comprehensive assessment that assigned the U.S. energy infrastructure a grade of D+, highlighting the urgent need for modernization to meet increasing demands from sectors like data centers and AI technologies. Luca’s work underscores MAC Engineering’s commitment to addressing critical infrastructure challenges and promoting sustainable solutions. ASCE’s 2025 Infrastructure Report Card |+6ASCE+6LinkedIn+6ASCEASCE
